Are You a Plant Parent? Do These Two Things and Thank Us Later

‘Tis the season for beautifying your home, and over the past year or so, many persons have been opting to use indoor plants to add some pizzazz to their spaces. Shopping Sense turned to the expert on all things plants, Crystal Benidict of Green Style Boutique Plant Shop. You may know her as @plant_parents_barbados on Instagram.

She recommended two methods that plant parents can incorporate in their plant care arsenal. And best of all? These tips will never go out of style!

Staking Plants on Moss Poles

A moss pole will give your plant that much-needed support, as well as stimulate the natural environment that tropical plants are adapted to.

Using a moss pole will prompt climbing plants to grow larger, healthier leaves and support the plant as they grow upwards. Aerial roots attach themselves onto the moss pole as the plant grows to anchor the plant. Plants can also be trained to attach to the pole using ties or strings.

Moss poles are used not just for support but also to enhance plants’ aesthetics, allowing them to grow vertically rather than sideways or in a bending manner.

This provides a welcoming environment for them to grow, and as a result, the plants tend to grow more healthy, producing more lush, green foliage.

Tailoring Potting Mediums

Every indoor gardener should strive for well-draining soil, as it’s what most plants appreciate. When soil drains well, it means the soil will retain moisture but that the water within it won’t overstay its welcome.

Using the correct potting medium could potentially solve 3/4 of your problems.

Using a mix tailored to a specific plant and caters to your personality as a gardener can help eliminate over or under-watering depending on where you sit on this spectrum.

Using the right mix can improve your plants’ performance. And because these mixes would have the optimal amount of nutrients and proper drainage along with suitable mediums required for said plant, it would reduce the amount of time you spend feeding and caring for it.

Your houseplants will only be as healthy as their roots, so it’s important to understand and encourage good root health and this starts with the materials that surround and support them.
