Trends: Try or Pass?

Festive trends and how to nail them. Will you try or pass?

This Christmas we will see more of everything – colours, patterns, textures, trees as people try to create a fantasy world to escape to. I’m a bit of a minimalist at heart but I welcome this trend. My son has already put in his order for a rainbow Christmas. So out with mommy’s chic gold and silver baubles and in with the festive colours!

Don’t just add more, choose your story and design into it for a pull together look. You don’t have to feel restricted, tell a different story in each room if you want. A beach-inspired look puts a holiday spin on classic beachy icons such as anchors, starfish, lighthouses and shells. A classic theme reminisces Christmases past with vintage-inspired décor and accents in classic holiday colours. A royal theme features rich, jewel-toned pieces with a focus on sparkly golds and deep royal blues, purples and greens. A farmhouse look uses rustic Christmas decorations – use pinecones, red and green plaid bows, bird ornaments and burlap to achieve this look.

Home for the Holidays

Alexa, play ‘Home for the Holidays’. Your social calendar is likely to be centred at home this season. We’ve been spending more time at home – many of us have adapted to living and working in the same space.

Break the monotony by creating a welcoming experience at home by appealing to all of your senses. Keep what you can see, feel, smell and hear in mind to create a full experience as you gather safely with friends and family. Turn up the Christmas music – find a playlist on your favourite platform. Bake ham and cookies and let the smell fill the air or grab a holiday scented candle. Christmas is about feeling cosy. You can achieve this by offering guests warm scented towels on arrival, adding a throw to the sofa, a welcome mat at the door and finally slipping into a silky robe and fuzzy slippers once your day is over.

Let’s be honest! Glitter and shimmer will ALWAYS be a forever trend for the festive season. Lucky for us this is trending for “spring” 2022 and I say “spring” because we ain’t got no spring bout here! It’s either dry season or rainy season, PERIOD.

We are seeing bold graphic glitter liner on the runways. However, we all know that even a regular winged liner can go left real fast! For those able, go for it! But for those who have no clue where to start let’s keep it simple.

You will need:

1. Tape
2. Angled brush
3. Adhesive. (Eyelash glue or spirit gum. NO HAIR GLUE!)
N.B A fine tip liquid liner is an asset.

STEP 1

Tape from the outer corner of the eye and up, diagonally towards the brow. Decide on the angle and repeat on the other eye. Make sure they are even. Always do the most difficult eye first. This is typically the right eye for the right-handed.

STEP 2
Draw your line with your liquid liner by placing the tip down on the inner corner of the eye, applying medium pressure and sliding it outwards close to the lash line. Follow the outline of the tape when you get to the outer corners. You can also ditch the liner and use your adhesive to create your wing.

STEP 3
With your angled brush, press the glitter into the line and remove the tape carefully. You can then use tape to remove excess glitter around the eye.

Working with pigments and glitter can be tricky business with all the messy fallout. A little trick I like

to use, in addition to using the tape to remove fallout, is a loose powder. Lightly place powder with a brush or sponge under the eye. This will catch the fallout and then you can easily dust it away. Another method would be to apply all eye makeup first and then remove fallout with a wipe.
